Drapetomaniac: An app to find Black authors and Black characters
Coined in 1851 by Samuel A. Cartwright as a Mental illness that caused enslaved Black people to flee captivity (Ancient Greek δραπέτης (drapetes, “runaway slave”) + μανία (mania, “madness”). I was taught that education is the key to freedom, so we should all dare to be drapetomaniacs!
